This is the old educational institution in India.It was constituted by the Madras Act of 1926. The University College of Arts was inaugurated in 1931 with courses of Telugu language & literature, History, Politics. After one year, the College of Science and Technology was established with Honours courses in Physics and Chemistry.

AU is also the first to be considered as a residential and teaching cum affiliating University.
